The Keys to the (Burger)Kingdom

Burger King has just been purchased by McDonalds – or so says their recently hacked Twitter account.

Giving out the keys to your twitter account is not something that should be done lightly. We see far too many organisations happily dishing out log in details to many different members of staff, and even individuals outside of the organisation (social media consultants like Pickle Jar for instance*) without much thought to the damage that could be done with such a valuable piece of information.

One tweet from Burger King’s twitter account goes out instantly to over 90,000 followers, and that’s just directly. Being such a global brand, thousands of people share Burger King’s tweets with their own networks increasing this number exponentially. Forty minutes after Burger King’s official twitter account got hacked, over a thousand people had retweeted the first offending tweet making it a global story within minutes.

Of course hacking does happen, and even the most secure accounts can get broken in to, but we wanted to take this opportunity to remind our clients of the importance of internet security. It isn’t just brand damage that is at risk if your twitter account gets hacked, you might have people’s personal information stored in your direct messages who disclosed this information thinking it was being sent to an official at your organisation only.

There are many different ways to keep your accounts as secure as possible. Social media monitoring and management tools such as Hootsuite mean that individuals from within your organisation can be invited to have access to your social media accounts, without ever actually knowing any passwords. Should a situation then arise, you are able to revoke access to the individual without having to change all the passwords.
